A few days ago we made a forty-five minute trip over to the neighbouring department of the Lot to take some aerial shots of the village of Rocamadour. It’s an amazing sight from the air, built into the side of a deep gorge above the River Alzou, a tributary of the Dordogne. The buildings rise in stages up the side of the four hundred foot cliff, topped with a château built in the middle-ages. The village is steeped in history with stories of pilgrims, and apparently has a subterranean church built in 1166. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.
Wow! That is so interesting! Thanks for sharing Jude! 🙂

I loved both shots Jude. Amazing how the buildings are flat against the sides of the canyon. Quite something.

Thanks Kate. Yes some houses are actually built into the rock – kind of house-caves. It’s a fascinating place, very popular with tourists.
